Custom Community TinyMCE Speller Addin - CS 2.1

written by Rick Reszler on Monday, August 21 2006

Michael is at it again over at Custom Community and I am very happy about this little gem, while it's very nice to have IE spell built into the core of Community Server 2.1 unfortunately it only works with the Internet Explorer web browser so if you or your users prefer to use another web browser you are out of luck.

Well not anymore because this wonderful little addin works with other web browsers like FireFox and Mozilla and this is a very good thing for me because I prefer the FireFox web browser with all of it's available extensions I could not live without, below I will post the original information as you will find over at Custom Community when you download it from the file section here.

So what does this do anyway?
The Custom Community Systems TinyMCE Speller Addin provides cross browser support for spell checking within the TinyMCE editor. It provides a familiar MS Office like interface, marking the misspelled words inline within the editor, and supplying drop down suggestions.

The spell checker is based on the TinySpell Spellchecker provided by Moxie, and adapted for Community Server.

How Does it Work?

The Speller uses AJAX to make calls back to the server to supply a list of misspelled words and possible suggestions. On the server-side the spell checking is made through the selected provider. Really, this could be any spell checking system you like, so long as it is wrapped with the specific provider interface.

There are two providers supplied with this BETA release. The NetSpell provider using NetSpell 2.1.7, and the Google Provider, which processes spell checking through Google.

You can download it here and see it in action on my site as well as here.
