CS 2.1 on Windows Server 2007 Codename "Longhorn"

Well tonight for fun I installed CommunityServer 2.1 on Windows Server 2007 "Longhorn"

I downloaded the latest release (build 5600 32bit) of Windows Server 2007 Codename "Longhorn" from Connect this afternoon and then tonight after work I burned a DVD and installed in on my test server here at the house all went very well, I only encountered one issue and it was when I added the IIS7 role to the server it reported that the install had failed but after closing the error box I found that IIS7 was indeed installed and all options I picked were all present and accounted for. Smile

I then installed SQL2005 Server on it from MSDN and all went well with that install as well, I then setup my domain folders and permissions and dropped in a web installer version of CommunityServer 2.1 ASP.NET 2 of course configured the installer and let it fly and within a few minutes I had it up and running.

I really like what I have seen so far of IIS7 is it so smart that when I first tried to run the [CS} installer it knew the application was not ready for the new Integrated Pipeline Mode application pool and gave me the command to type in a command window to upgrade it, after doing so the CommunityServer installer ran and installed successfully. I had a problem when trying to login so then I went to the Session State Control in the new IIS MMC and changed it to disable and then replaced the web.config with the stock one from CommunityServer and then I was able to login and everything was working.

IIS7 also has Classic Pipeline Mode for application pools which lets you run older IIS6 applications with ease, I can't wait to be working with it on a daily basis all these new tools will make administering a Windows web server much much easier.

If my test server is up you can see it in action here

Oh yes IIS7 has many improvements over IIS6! I can't wait for it to be released and that is why I am getting a jump on it now so I am ready. :-)
